Smith Mountain Lake will be giving the red-carpet treatment for the premiere of “Lake Effects,” a movie filmed at the lake last year. The movie will be screened at Westlake Cinema on Friday, Oct. 7. Show times and ticket prices will be announced on the film’s Facebook page.
The screening will include a red carpet event similar to those at a major Hollywood premiere. Anyone who attends the premiere will receive a free movie poster. Some of the actors will be on site, but a list of exactly who will attend has not been released. This will be the first public screening of “Lake Effects.” Additional screenings may be added if demand merits.
“The community was such an integral part from day one, we wanted them to see it first,” said Sara Elizabeth Timmins, the film’s producer and a Moneta resident.
Following the screening, there will be an after-party at Mango’s Bar & Grill at Bridgewater Plaza. Party proceeds will benefit a scholarship fund set up in memory of “Lake Effects” script writer and actor Scott Winters, who died July 12.
Reservations for the premiere will be accepted beginning Thursday, Sept. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Westlake Cinema and on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
“Lake Effects” is a family comedy/drama about a woman (played by Jane Seymour) and her two daughters who embark on a journey of rediscovery after the family patriarch dies. The movie is set at and was filmed at Smith Mountain Lake.
Other actors appearing in the movie include Scottie Thompson, Madeline Zima, Jeff Fahey, Eyal Podell, Ben Savage, Richard Moll, Casper Van Dien and Sean Patrick Flanery.
“Lake Effects” was signed earlier this month with distributor Vision Films, a company based in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Timmins said Vision is shopping the film at network television stations.
Westlake Cinema is owned by The Willard Companies, whose president, well-known developer Ron Willard, was an investor and supporter of “Lake Effects.”
Timmins said Oct. 7 was chosen for the screening to coincide with the SML Charity Home Tour, held Oct. 7-9. Timmins said they want to promote local economic development and tourism, and hope that people coming into town for the premiere also will attend the Home Tour.

The Fannish Life: A Boondock Saint Battles ‘Mongolian Death Worms’
If you see only one giant worm movie this weekend, it should be “Mongolian Death Worms,” which premieres on Syfy May 8 at 9 p.m. ET
As was the case for Syfy’s “Mothman,” this movie has a premise based on existing folklore.
A visit to Wikipedia will tell you all you ever wanted to know, and then some.
I didn’t get a screener for MDW, but I watched the sneak peek on the Syfy website, and I was part of a conference call with Sean Patrick Flanery who is the lead actor in the film.
Sean’s enthusiasm for the project is enough to make me want to watch.
OK, I was going to watch anyway because I can’t pass up a movie with a title like “Mongolian Death Worms.”
Up to now, “Tremors” has been my pick for Best Giant Worm Movie Ever. Saturday night will tell if this new rival takes over the title.
Many of you will recall Sean’s roles in “Young Indiana Jones” and “The Dead Zone,” but my favorite role from his past efforts is Connor McManus in the Boondock Saints movies.
Admittedly, it’s ironic that I like Connor so much. I’m a pacifist, but in fiction, the clear definition of good and evil and the eradication of evil by the Boondock Saints is quite satisfying.
Connor is an over-the-top character, a fact that led me to ask Sean which character is most over the top, Connor McManus or Daniel in “Mongolian Death Worms.”
Sean had a rapid response to my question.
I suspect I was not the first to ask it. … READ MORE

The jury’s still out on how horror-oriented Robert Kurtzman’s latest directorial project, Deadly Impact, is, but come April 20th we’ll know for sure as the flick’s unrated DVD hits store shelves from MGM Home Entertainment.
The film stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Joe Pantoliano in an explosive game of cat and mouse, and you can check out the trailer below the following synopsis:
Deadly Impact follows hard-nosed cop Thomas Armstrong (Flanery), whose life was shattered when he became the helpless target of a mastermind murderer. Returning home after a much-needed break, Armstrong joins the FBI to seek revenge and help track down the same killer that threatened his existence; however, this time the assassin is back to terrorize not just a single person, but the entire city. In an exhilarating race against time, Armstrong must stay one step ahead to capture the madman and save innocent lives before time runs out. Turning up the heat with extreme stunt work, Deadly Impact is filled with non-stop action and suspense.
